Meet Russ Merbeth

From Lawyer and Lobbyist to Multi-Unit Franchise Owner

After spending decades as a corporate executive, in-house attorney, and lobbyist in Washington, DC, my career took an unexpected turn when the firm I worked for decided to wind down at the start of the pandemic.
I was a fully employed executive for more than 30 years. And then all of a sudden, I wasn’t.
Retirement was an option, but I wasn’t ready for that. I knew I still had meaningful, productive work ahead of me. At the same time, I also realized I no longer wanted to simply get another job and return to the life I had built on Capitol Hill.
I wanted greater autonomy. More ownership over my future. The opportunity to build something of my own and stay connected to the world in a purposeful way.
Envisioning a Different Future
At the suggestion of family friends who were running a successful franchise business, I connected with FranChoice, which has become the gold standard for franchise consulting. The consultant I worked with had expert knowledge of the industry and matched me with personalized franchise options I wouldn’t have found searching on my own.
He guided me to Alloy Personal Training, one of the fastest-growing boutique personal training concepts in the United States. For the first time, I could clearly envision a different future: one built around ownership and independence. I could even create a legacy for my family. This would be something that would give me renewed purpose, as I worked to build teams, create jobs, and inspire growth.
I took the plunge.
Today, I’m the owner and CEO of Black Rose Fitness and a multi-unit franchisee of Alloy Personal Training. I lead staffing, operations, growth strategy and performance for all of my Alloy locations.
And because I’ve learned so much about what it takes to successfully start and scale a franchise, I decided to found Bandera Advisors to help guide others on a similar journey to becoming a business owner. I enjoy helping others achieve their dreams of entrepreneurship.
